Shell Barendrecht

Shell CO2 Storage B.V. (SCS) proposed the subsurface sequestration of pure CO2 in two depleted gas fields in the Barendrecht area. The Shell refinery in Pernis was to supply the CO2. The project was selected and supported by the government after a tender procedure.

Besides the technical aspects, the legislative and permitting aspects were also investigated. Also, valuable experience concerning public perception were obtained.

The CO2 would be transported by pipeline to the depleted gas fields of Barendrecht and Barendrecht-Ziedewij, where it would be sequestered. A large study on all possible risks was carried out together with TNO and a dedicated monitoring plan was set up. SCS builds on the wide operational knowledge within Shell which includes decades of experience with safe Underground Gas Storage. Their aim was to store 10 million ton CO2 over a period of 25 years.

On November 4 2010 the Dutch government decided to cancel the storage project because they claim a lack of local support and they claim that other pilot projects outside the Netherlands already provide much of the technical aspects.
