NUON Magnum

Energy supplier Nuon is executing the Nuon Magnum project in the Eemshaven. Nuon Magnum is a 1200 MW multi-fuel (natural gas, coal, biomass) power plant based on gasification technology and to be equipped with pre-combustion CO2 capture. Currently the natural gas fired part of Nuon Magnum is being constructed.

The main goal of the Nuon Magnum CO2-capture project is to reduce the CO2 emissions to levels equal to those of a natural gas fired power plant. A NER300 subsidy application was filed in February 2011, focussing on storage of the captured CO2 in depleted onshore natural gas fields.

Experience with pre-combustion CO2 capture will come from Nuon's pilot project CO2 Catch-up at the Willem-Alexander power plant at Buggenum. Through this pilot project Nuon aims to acquire knowledge and gain more experience of innovative solutions for reducing CO2 emissions.

Timeline:
Start construction natural gas section: 2009
